Health and Air Pollution in Taegu City, 1972

Abstract
|
|
|
The adve,se reactions of eye and respiratory *_ract due to the polluted air in the resider.~s of Daegu city were studied. The city had about 250 thousand of hauseholds with anprotiirlatc., 1.2 million of population. There ~, ere about lU thousand automobiles and about a thonsa_,d ;,gar. _:_ actnring industries, where apnro~:ii:latc´y 40 tons of sulfur containing in the various reels ~.,-c_~ burned out daily.
This suvey :vas made from April to June, 1J72. There were no epidemics of f´.ue or co:,:,::i_on cold during this survey time. The level of sulfur dio..ide was within the allowable limit anC tl7e other pollutants were remained in tr~cc. :`~ Total of 1, 050 persons over 15 years of age ~~,-crc divided into two groups. Onc group cnnsated of 73´7 individuals were selected from t´.:e ~:~aa area, a hussy street around th^ crrns road placed ~~n front of the \,lain Store of Daeyu ´_-´~.n:. The another, 313 from tl~e two villa;;cs, Dacmycong Dong and Sanjeon Dong.of \ai;:~_hcon ~Iyeon, Gyeongsan Gun. It i5 about 30 km far fronn Daegu city.
The data were arranged from a questionair including 35 questions replied throuhh :h~ ir.~~Jr~,--iew by the several trained workers, medical students and nurses for this work.
The irritant reactions such as the imflamed (Question No. 10) and pain (Q 13) of eye, a :d forign body sensation(Q 19) and choking lump or swelling (Q 20) of throat were more rq~ea´. found among the urban than those in the rural. In contrast, the blinked of watery eye (G~ L), and the scanted sputum (Q 21), coughing (Q22) and hemophtysis (Q24) might had been b~- ~-arious dusts ~,vere n.ore in the rural. The difference ::n the rate of frequency- between these two zreas are statisticaLy significant. Pertitcular´.y common cold and sore throat were more froqent among the male than the female in the urban.
